Northwest Contemporary
The dominant residential style in the Seattle area. Characterized by: post-and-beam structural expression, extensive glazing toward views, natural wood (cedar, fir) inside and out, low-pitched roofs with deep overhangs, and indoor-outdoor connection to decks and gardens. At its best, Northwest Contemporary disappears into the landscape rather than competing with it.
Mid-Century Modern
A major part of Seattle’s existing housing stock, the 1950s-1970s Eastside ranch and split-level is everywhere in Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, and Sammamish. Characterized by flat or gently sloping roofs, clerestory windows, open plans, and the integration of exterior and interior. MCM renovations have strong design momentum in Seattle.
